CNC Machinist


Job Description

Sets up and operates conventional, special-purpose, and CNC machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic parts, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machineability of materials, and layout techniques: Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine requirements. Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines, such as lathes, vertical or horizontal mills and grinders. Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors, such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input or edit computerized machine control media. Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required. Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications, using precision measuring instruments. Sets up and operates machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data. May develop specifications from general description and draw sketches of parts or product to be fabricated. May confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining problems.

  • Arithmetic – Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division without a calculator.
  • Can recognize common classes of machine tools, and understands their uses, and can identify major components of machine
  • Understands and utilizes number line
  • Understands and can use basic precision measurement tools, e. micrometers, calipers, go-no go gages, height gages, etc.
  • Can read and comprehend information on orthographic
  • Can read and comprehend geometric dimension and
  • Understand and can properly use process adjustment and process control.
  • Has good written and oral communication
  • Can perform tooling maintenance, i.e. drill sharpening,
  • Has basic problem solving
  • Understands basic programming
  • Capable of basic quality assurance
  • Understands and uses basic Mazatrol programming
  • Understands and uses basic conversational programming
  • Understands and uses basic
  • Understands and uses basic
  • Understands and uses basic
  • Understands and uses speed and feed
  • Understands material properties, recognition of common materials, e. ferrous, and non-ferrous materials.
  • Understands tooling theory, i.e. cutting tools, tool holding devices, and work holding
  • Understands the use of bolt circles, angles, and points of
  • Understands and uses ASCII programming
  • Understands cutting theory, i.e. can explain heat, shock, friction, distortion, machineabiliy, cutter geometry, and chip
  • Understands and uses good hand lapping

Should be clean in work habits, keeping their work areas and any community areas clean and free of obstructions. Must also be well kept in personal hygiene, wearing clean work clothes that are free of tatters or tears. Shirttails tucked in, shirtsleeves buttoned, or neatly rolled up. Must be capable of lifting 75 pounds to a height of thirty-six inches. Should also be capable of completing any task assigned by supervision or management, in a safe and productive manner.
