INA, Ill. (October 9, 2026) — For Rend Lake College alum Jonathan McCoy (Benton, Class of 2007), the journey from an Information Technology student to a Talent Manager at Continental Tire highlights the value of a solid educational foundation and a strong local network.
"The learning at RLC was deeply shaped by putting knowledge into action," McCoy said. "Getting the opportunity to build that muscle early on is something that I have continued to master through my professional career."
Explaining how this translated to his technical background, he noted, "I remember learning about the theory of wireless networking and then applying that in a real-world application by designing how many wireless routers and survey of location placement in the student center for maximum coverage and effectiveness."
McCoy’s ties to the college extend beyond his own student days. Over the last 20 years, he has grown to appreciate how vital community is to long-term success, recognizing that his achievements are the collective result of those who supported, challenged and invested in him.
"Martha McCreery and Ricky Robinson are instructors that I remember most. They were not only effective at teaching the material, but they were always in my corner challenging me to go further and cheering me on," shared McCoy. "It was Rick that made the connection with Sharon Bowman and Ed Ruffino through the RLC STARS program as the initial connection to Continental."
McCoy's connection with the campus continued through the RLCF Children’s Center. Partnering with the Center provided high-quality childcare for his son and daughter, allowing both him and his wife to remain fully engaged in their professional careers while building connections with educators and staff that remain active today.

Today, in his role shaping talent at Continental Tire, McCoy often helps people look beyond the immediate moment to identify their long-term goals. He emphasizes the importance of curiosity, adaptability, and leaning into local opportunities
"Southern Illinois has endless opportunity for those looking to build the life they want to live," McCoy noted. "Not being afraid to try something and fail or pivot to something different is all part of the learning process."
He encourages students and job seekers to connect with the "giants" in the community who are willing to share their experience with those who are hungry to learn and listen.
