MT. VERNON, Ill. (March 18, 2015) - Take your barbering or cosmetology skills to the next level by enrolling in Rend Lake College’s associate degree programs, located at Studio RLC in the MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon.

Each program will have one additional semester added to the occupational certificate that will be comprised of general education courses - such as English, Communications, and Psychology - to meet the associate degree qualifications. Students who complete the certificate will have the option to continue on for the degree.

“These programs will offer students additional skills needed for better customer service and management positions,” said Studio RLC Director Daphne Mitchell. “As potential employees, the associate degree will give our graduates higher consideration for employment. It will also give them options for stackable credentials or additional education in the future.”

The Barber program prepares students for positions in the barber field, including work as barbers in chains or independent shops, or open their own shop. Specialized curriculum focuses on practical, hands-on experience with men’s specialty haircuts, shaving and facial design, men’s facials, and includes a barber internship. Graduates can sit for the Illinois Barber licensure exam after successful completion of the program.

Similarly, the Cosmetology program covers shampooing, cutting, coloring, manicures, facials and the latest trends in styling. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to take the Illinois Cosmetologist licensure exam.

Mitchell added, “From the business standpoint, the associate degree will help students prepare for owning their own salon with business and customer service aspects.”

Students enrolled in the Barber and Cosmetology certificate programs will meet from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and at the same times on every third Saturday. Both the Barber and Cosmetology associate degree programs will require four semesters of study. Students can enroll now for the summer Cosmetology program starting Monday, May 4. Another round of cosmetology courses and the Barber program will begin Thursday Aug. 27.
