According to its website, PTK's mission is to "recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. To achieve this purpose, Phi Theta Kappa shall provide the opportunity for the development of leadership and service, for an intellectual climate for exchange of ideas and ideals, for lively fellowship for scholars, and for stimulation of interest in continuing academic excellence.”
Established by Missouri two-year college presidents in 1918, PTK is the largest honor society in American higher education with more than 3 million members and 1,300 chapters located across the U.S., its territories, Canada, Germany and Japan. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized PTK as the official honor society for two-year colleges.
