Brian Dorris (Sesser) was seated as a new member of the Rend Lake College Board of Trustees Tuesday. Three seats were up for election in April. In addition to Dorris, incumbents Randy Rubenacker (McLeansboro) and John Kabat (Scheller) won reelection; all three were elected to six-year terms. Dorris is an RLC alumnus, attending from 1987-1989, after which he transferred to Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. He is a project manager for Sierra Bravo Contractors and owns his own company, Dorris Trucking, both located in Sesser.
The board also elected officers Tuesday. Officers selected were Rubenacker, chair; Larry Manning, vice chair; and Eric Black, secretary. In related moves, Manning was reappointed as the board's Illinois Community College Trustees Association representative, and Angie Kistner, RLC's Vice President of Finance and Administration, was appointed board treasurer. The officers are appointed to two-year terms.
The board approved a resolution of intent to issue $5 million in funding bonds for the purpose of paying claims against the district. Prior to the action, a public hearing was held on the issue.
A new course, Law Enforcement Scenarios, was approved and authorized for submission to the Illinois Community College Board for action. The course is designed to provide realistic scenario-based training for students interested in learning the skills needed to use proper judgment while handling some of the more common types of law enforcement incidents an officer might face during his or her career.
In related actions, the Early Childhood Education Technical Assistance Credential was changed from 9 to 16 credit hours, and the Math for Health Occupations class was changed from 6 to 5 credit hours.
Charlotte Loss was appointed Community and Corporate Education Specialist effective May 16. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from Southern Illinois University Carbondale and an Associate in Applied Science Degree from John A. Logan College. She most recently has served as a clerk and bookkeeper for the Franklin County Circuit Clerk's Office.
The board transferred Lynn Salesberry from full-time temporary Nursing Instructor to regular full-time Nursing Instructor on an industrial contract effective May 16. Salesberry has more than 25 years of clinical experience, and prior to RLC, served as a registered nurse at Heartland Regional Medical Center.
The board accepted with regret the retirement resignation of Betty Jo Herbert, Director of the Nursing Program and Nursing Professor, effective June 30, 2017. She had been with RLC full-time since August 2006. "Rend Lake College has given me the opportunity to learn and grow as both an instructor and a leader in the nursing community," Herbert wrote in her retirement letter. "I wish the nursing program continued success, and I will continue to be a lifelong supporter of Rend Lake College."
The board accepted with regret the resignation of Heather Sanders, Financial Aid Specialist, effective May 12, 2017. "I have enjoyed my time at Rend Lake College. I am thankful for the skills learned, experience gained and relationships built," Sanders wrote in her resignation letter. "Rend Lake College is a wonderful place to work and I wish the best for its continued success."
