RLC and SIC Perform a Memorable Spring Concert

INA, Ill. (May 9, 2023) — Music students at Rend Lake College and Southeastern Illinois College converged on the RLC Ina Campus Thursday night for the annual Spring Concert.  

The night began with Bill Reynolds conducting RLC's Concert Band in Kentucky Sunrise by Karl King (1891-1971); Ainava ar putniem (Landscape with Birds) by Peteris Vasks (b. 1946) with Imogen Prudent-Perry on flute, The Fantasticks, Overture for Concert Band by Harvey Schmidt (1929-2018) and arranged by Alfred Reed (1921-2005); and La Cambiale Di Matrimonio Overture by Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868) and arranged by Frank Hudson. 

Members of the RLC Concert Band include (flute) Prudent-Perry, Jeanne Reynolds and Aiden Bean; (clarinet) Alexis Gray, Logan Jornd, Gavin McConnaughay and Aaron Romani; (bass clarinet) RLC Music Director Sara Alstat-Sanders; (alto sax) 
Seyah Schernekau, Grant Shaffer and Shyla Williams; (tenor sax) Evan Arview and Piper Chambers; (bari sax) Liam Asbery, (trumpet) Daniel Garavaglia, Carter Hertenstein, Jordan Johnson, Alec Lemons and Landrey O'Neal; (horn) Len Campbell and Band Director Jessica Weise;  (trombone) Dan Reynolds; (euphonium) Jackson Snodsmith; (string bass) Arview; (percussion) Piper Chambers, Korben Cox, Andrew Hays, Jakob Maher, Sawyer Overstreet and Natalie Warren; (tuba) Band Director David Mateyka and Namen Schimpf.           

Next up was Reynolds conducting the RLC Jazz Band in Night Train by Oscar Washington (1912-2005) and arranged by Bud Estes; Dansevise by Otto Francker and arranged by Prudent-Perry; Big Daddy's Blues by Howard Rowe (b. 1942); and Windy by Ruthann Friedmann (b. 1944).

Students included Evan Arview (bass), Piper Chambers (tenor sax), Korben Cox (drums), Daniel Garavaglia (trumpet), Alexis Gray (tenor sax), Jordan Johnson (trumpet), Logan Jornd (alto sax), Prudent-Perry (alto sax), Reynolds (trombone), Aaron Romani (piano), Namen Schimpf (trombone), and Grant Shaffer (bari sax).   

 

The evening concluded with performances divided into themes — ancient sacred texts, songs of love, American sounds, a hymn, and Gospel praise — by the RLC & SIC Concert Choirs. Songs included selections from Mass for Three Voices by William Byrd (1539-1623); Locus Iste by Anton Bruckner (1824-1896); Love Lost, A Cycle of Four Satirical Poems on Love by Paul Sjolund (b. 1935); Homeward Bound by Marta Keen (b. 1953) and arranged by Jay Althouse (b. 1951); American Folk Rhapsody by Linda Steen Spevacek (b. 1945); Old Joe Clark by Greg Gilpin (b. 1964); My Song in the Night by Paul Christiansen (1914-1997); and Let Everything that Hath Breath by Jeffrey L. Ames (b. 1969) with Aaron Romani on piano, Evan Arview on bass and Korben Cox on drums.   

The RLC Concert Choir was directed by Sara Alstat-Sanders with Romani providing accompaniment. Its members include sopranos Kira Buntin, Lacey Grammer, Seyah Schernekau and Jayme Soldan; altos Madison Caraker, Olivia Drew, Brianna Johnson, Prudent-Perry, Maggie Stacey, Auria Tessone and Dylann Torres; tenors Daniel Garavaglia, Caleb Qualls, Romani and Grant Shaffer; and basses Evan Arview, Cox, Aaron Hart and Daven Ort.

The SIC Concert Choir was directed by Clinton Cory Garamane with Melinda Tolley providing accompaniment. Its members include sopranos Kristina Aldrich, Addison Bean, Courtney Boulds, Allie Hammers, Omari Jackson and Bailey Warner; altos Ashlynn Bergman, Madison Hall, Skyler Morss, Rylee Pate, Hailey Potts, McKenzie Rider, Caitlyn Scruggs, Neva Wasson and 
Jillian Womack; tenors Remington Curry, Travis Dukes, Chanton Lee and Andy Waters; and basses Noah DeVous, Collin Garnett, Bentley Linch and Ryan Wilson.
