MT. VERNON, Ill., (Aug. 12, 2013) - The Illinois Small Business Development Center at the Rend Lake College MarketPlace is pleased to host a series of informational workshops related to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a series of federal reforms that aim, in part, to expand access to insurance coverage to millions of Americans.

The first workshop is set for 10 a.m. until noon Thursday, Aug. 15, and is planned to familiarize the public with the ACA marketplace. This workshop will be led by representatives from Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn’s office.

“The ACA will make affordable health coverage a reality for hundreds of thousands of people in Illinois,” said Jennifer Koehler, Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace Director. “We know that we have a lot of work to do between now and the start of enrollment to educate the general public about the opportunity to obtain health coverage and the peace of mind that comes with it through the ACA marketplace.”

Koehler added that enrollment in the Affordable Care Act will begin in October for coverage beginning Jan. 1.

The second workshop, geared toward business owners, will be held from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21. Any business owner who is uncertain about provisions of the Affordable Care Act should plan to attend the workshop, which will be presented by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

“The Affordable Care Act provides small business owners with access and opportunity to provide affordable health care options for their employees,” said SBA Administrator Karen G. Mills.

Topics to be discussed include small business tax credits, W-2 reporting of health care costs, new limits on flexible spending accounts, and employer shared responsibility and involvement in the new health insurance marketplace. The workshop will also outline new Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employer reporting requirements.

Seating is limited for both workshops, and will go on a first-come, first-serve basis. To reserve your spot, contact Nicholas LeMay at lemay@rlc.edu or 618-242-5813.
