INA, Ill. (Aug. 28, 2023)—The students, faculty, and staff celebrated the accomplishments of two graduating students: Marcy Baker and Devin Frost.

The students and staff in Adult Education at RLC celebrated two of their students’ accomplishments with a personal graduation ceremony. Marcy Baker (Christopher) and Devin Frost (Sesser) both earned their State of Illinois High School Diploma after successfully passing four separate tests and their Illinois Constitution.
Baker spoke kind words about the program and how helpful all her instructors have been in her short time. Previously homeschooled, most of what she knew prior to attending RLC was self-taught. She dedicated herself to her studies and finished her State of Illinois High School Diploma in six short weeks.
The students in Adult Education work on a computer program that walks them through the four core subjects of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Whenever they are struggling or in need of assistance, the faculty and staff are there to assist them. Baker said that Chris Kent, the Adult Education Language Arts and Social Studies instructor, was especially helpful during her time at RLC. She said she appreciated how he applied hands-on learning to her education.
Frost had been in the program for eight months and was guided in Math and Science by Gary Davenport. He passed his Math test first, which Dr. Linda Stasko, the Director of Adult Education, commended him for because that is the most difficult subject their students study.
Stasko complimented all the instructors in the program, saying that they truly care about students’ success. “They’re all extremely motivating and positive,” she said.
In Adult Education, they also prepare their students for life after graduation. Baker and Frost also completed the Bridge class, which teaches them career awareness, how to write a resume, and assists them in searching for a job or a college.
After formally graduating from RLC in December, Baker plans to attend SIU where she hopes to study to become a Counselor and Frost wants to go directly into the workforce, looking for jobs in railroad.
Baker and Frost both shared words of inspiration. Frost encouraged people to work hard and never give up; and Baker said that no matter what one’s upbringing is, they can do whatever they set their minds to.
