INA, Ill. (Nov. 15, 2019)
We were joined by T Street Pub of Christopher this week to honor veterans and services members who are students, faculty, staff and family.
T Street provided a free, hot meal for our honored heroes. There was a presentation featuring guest speakers John Metzger and Dave Ellingsworth. Metzger is the Student Veterans Liaison for the VFW Department of Illinois. He shared information about a couple of financial opportunities for veterans and active military. One is the "Help A Hero" scholarship through Sports Clips. Metzger said it provides a $5,000 scholarship to qualified candidates. The other is the "Unmet Needs" program through Burger King, helping military families overcome financial hardships. From groceries to car repairs, Metzger said the VFW and Burger King are willing to help. Since 2004, 3,500 families have received around $5 million through this program.
More information about each program can be found online at www.vfw.org.
Ellingsworth talked about serving in Vietnam and the challenges of returning home as a veteran at that time. He read "I Was A Soldier, I Am A Veteran" by retired Colonel Daniel K. Cedusky.
The event was coordinated by RLC Veterans Coordinator Kacie Hunter and Eric Gayer at T-Street Pub in Christopher. RLC student Lacey Grammer sang the National Anthem.
