INA, Ill. (July 23, 2013) - Stepping into a career in medical coding just became easier thanks to a new partnership between Rend Lake College and Physicians Filing Service of Mt. Vernon.

Through the partnership, students in RLC’s Medical Coding certificate program can participate in on-the-job training with pay with the possibility to obtain full-time employment upon the successful completion of the certificate. PFS is also offering partial tuition reimbursement to students.

The tuition assistance program is set up so that students pay the tuition themselves, and then receive the reimbursement after completing the certificate and working for PFS. Students are eligible for up to $3,500 in total reimbursement, with half of the reimbursement paid after one year of employment and the other half paid after the second year of employment.

PFS will be selecting up to three students per semester for the tuition reimbursement program, starting this fall. RLC students interested in the program should enroll in the Medical Coding program through the Allied Health Division. Once registered, students can fill out an application to PFS. It is recommended that the application be submitted to PFS approximately three weeks prior to course registration.

The U.S. Department of Labor states that jobs in medical billing and coding will increase 21 percent between 2010 and 2020, or an addition of 37,700 jobs to the already 179,500 job opportunities. Medical Coders work in hospitals or physician’s offices, usually as full-time employees, with a median pay of $32,350, based on 2010 statistics.

For more information or to register for the Medical Coding program, contact the Allied Health Division at 618-437-5321 Ext. 1251.
