INA, Ill. (Nov. 24, 2014) - A group of Rend Lake College Warriors took over the Mt. Vernon Walmart on Nov. 15 to participate in the America Recycles Day Green Scavenger Hunt, coming away with a one-of-a-kind experience and information that will help them when shopping for recyclable or green items.
The event was sponsored by the RLC Greening the Campus Committee and Keep America Beautiful, and was composed of several teams of two students from different RLC athletic teams and academic clubs. America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting recycling.
Winning the scavenger hunt was Hayley Spicer (Sims) and Emma Bachman (Carmi) who represent the RLC Softball team. They were followed by Quentin Overturf (McLeansboro) and Damien Townley (Ewing) of the College Bowl team in second place.
RLC Sustainability Professional Tyson Ellis said the event was a success in educating the student participants and the community about buying and recycling different kinds of plastics.
“I spoke to the group at the beginning and end of the scavenger hunt about the seven different plastics that we are regularly in contact with,†said Ellis. “Knowing there are different numbered plastics is essential for sorting and recycling plastics correctly. RLC recycles plastics numbers one and two, and information about them can be found on our website.â€
