MT. VERNON, Ill. (Sept. 30, 2019)
Rend Lake College Visual Communication Design (VCD) students collaborated with Summersville Grade School Superintendent Mike Denault to design and install environmental graphics at Summersville Grade School on Sept. 16 and 17.

The project started in the Spring of 2019 when sophomore VCD students met with Mr. Denault to ask questions, visit and measure the prospective space. Students were divided into teams, that included freshman VCD students, where they each designed a proposal of environmental graphics and way finding that would be presented to the school board for approval.

"I would like to thank Summersville Grade School and Superintendent Michael D. Denault for this opportunity," said 2019 RLC graduate and VCD student Sabryn Griffin. "My group was able to use the skills we acquired through our classes at Rend Lake College and applied them to a real, tangible project. It is extremely rewarding to see how both the school and our class benefited from this project."

The vision was to implement a cohesive brand identity for the grade school and create inspirational graphics that enhanced not only the overall school environment but the learning environment for the grade schoolers. The workspace environment directly impacts productivity and happiness and the hope was to design a space that would give the students a sense of pride and identity in their learning space.

Rend Lake College Visual Communication Design students get to see their vision become a reality. A collaboration with Summersville Grade School let RLC students design and install their work.

"It is such a rewarding process to see collaboration of design ideas turn into tangible work that can have a positive impact not only on the students involved but the community as well," said VCD Professor Jennifer Tarantino Linsin.
