FRANKLIN COUNTY – Get creative with the Community Education Department at Rend Lake College. A cascade of courses coming soon will get the creativity flowing in Franklin County.

Draw, paint, make and “Kreate” with courses starting in early February and running through May.


First up is the six-session “Drawing and Painting for Anyone” where beginners and experienced artists will learn in a format fit to their individual needs. Participants will learn basic skills for drawing and painting like perspective, space, balance, value, color and shading. The class will take place from 6-8 p.m. each Monday, Feb. 4 - March 17, in room 109 at Benton Consolidated High School (BCHS). Cost is $48 plus a supply fee. Instructor is Billie Brannon. Participants will need to bring a pencil, eraser and drawing paper to the first session at which time painting supplies will be determined.

“Introduction to Antiques” is for anyone who enjoys antiques and would like to learn more about them. Throughout the three sessions, instructor Roger Edwards will cover collectibles, furniture and vintage items. The first class will be held at BCHS and additional sessions will span the antique stores of Benton. Intro to Antiques will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Feb. 19 - March 4. Cost is $24.

Discover an art from the past while “Making Lye Soap” from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, in room 103 at BCHS. This fascinating class will give participants a new perspective on the daily life of yesteryear. Individuals will be provided with recipes, directions, and all ingredients to make and take home three pounds of lye soap in one or two varieties. Bring a towel, small cooler, latex gloves and eye protection. Cost is $15 plus a $20 supply fee. Instructor is Ruth Daugherty.

“Bridge for Beginners” with instructor Julia Weathers will have participants on their way to becoming masters in only eight sessions. This card game will provide hours of enjoyment and fun. Designed for beginners or those who need to brush up on their Bridge skills, this class will instruct on the basic principles of contract bridge. Rules, etiquette, strategy bidding and defense will be covered in this class, which will take place from 6-8 p.m. each Monday, March 31- May 19, in room 109 at BCHS. Cost is $64.

Experience the beautiful “One Stroke” painting technique from certified instructor Virginia McCann during the four-session “Painting: One Stroke Quick and Easy.” Participants will learn basic techniques, combination strokes, insider tips and more. This class is for beginners, as well as expert decorative painters. Students will complete their very own masterpiece to take home at the end of class. Supplies will be purchased from the instructor during the first night of class for an approximate fee of $15. This class will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. each Thursday, April 3-24, in room 109 at BCHS. Cost is $32 plus the supply fee.

Area youth can learn how to turn a gold-colored bar of soap into a goldfish in “Kids Kreations: Woodcarving.” Using a plastic knife and soap as a stepping stone, instructor Jack Prinnel will teach kids the basic techniques of woodcarving while bringing out their creativity with some good, clean fun! Participants need to bring at least two bars of soap of any color. Cost is only $9 plus a supply fee. This class will take place from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 10, in room 118 at BCHS.


Design a simple and easy greeting card to share with others in “Greeting Card Swap”from noon - 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Christopher Civic Center. Each person will prepare and bring enough pre-cut and pre-scored kits for everyone attending with all the necessary stamps, inks and supplies included to make their card. Detailed directions will be mailed with the receipt for registering for Greeting Card Swap. Participants need to bring their own snacks, beverages and a project to work on in case they finish earlier than others. Cost is $15 plus a supply fee. Instructor is Lori Ragland.

Kids in the Kitchen is back in Christopher with a hopping holiday feature that is sure to hit the sweet spot! “Kids in the Kitchen: Easter” will have children cooking and stirring to their hearts’ content from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 14, at the Christopher Civic Center. Students who are not six years of age or older must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is only $9 plus a $5 supply fee. Instructor is Nancy Gulley.


Just what is tole painting? Find out with four sessions of “Tole Painting” with instructor Virginia McCann and RLC’s Community Education Department. Participants will learn brush usage, color mixing, preparation and surface sealing with the art of tole painting. Techniques such as blending, shading and detailing will be taught on a wood surface. Each student will complete a project perfect for Easter. This class will take place from 6-8 p.m. each Thursday, Feb. 21 - March 13, at the Sesser Community Building. Cost is $32 plus a $15 supply fee payable to McCann at the first session.

Kids in the Kitchen is back in Sesser with a hearty, holiday theme. Children will bake and paste their way through the Valentine holiday with “Kids in the Kitchen: Valentine’s Day” from 3-5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Foods Lab at Sesser-Valier High School. Cost is only $9 plus a $5 supply fee. Instructor is Nancy Gulley.
