Irish Women Writers

Ireland has a rich and lengthy literary tradition, and much has been contributed to the canon via Irish writers, specifically Joyce, Yeats, O’Casey, etc. However rich this tradition may be, it has unfortunately neglected the body of work created by female Irish writers. This course examines the tradition of Irish women writers and analyzes them from cultural and historical contexts. Some of the writers we will study include: Eavan Boland, Edith Somerville, Elizabeth Bowen, Edna O’Brien, Eileen Dubh O’Connell, Éilís Ní Dhuibhne, Frances Sheridan, Marina Carr, Lady Gregory, and Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill.
