This two-year transfer program leads to an Associate in Arts Degree. The curriculum is designed for students pursuing a baccalaureate degree in various areas of agriculture. It provides students with the background in agriculture and general studies necessary for advanced work at a four-year college or university. AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION & MANAGEMENT — Degree

APPLIED SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY DIVISION

The two-year Agricultural Production and Management program leads to an Associate in Applied Science Degree combining many of the features in mechanical and business curricula to help students stay abreast with the dynamic, ever-changing agriculture industry.

These changes are increasing the need and the opportunities for individuals who possess both technical knowledge and management ability. RLC students develop decision- making abilities by being exposed to such areas as farm management, economics and marketing. Courses like those dealing with feeds and feeding, soils and fertilizers and ag chemicals are intended to help develop technical skills.

Unique to this program are the mechanical courses designed to develop skills needed to service the machines common in today’s agriculture.

The Agricultural Production and Management program originally was designed for students who already have an opportunity to farm. However, many other employment opportunities are available as managers and herdsmen on large grain and livestock farms or as fertilizer, chemical and seed suppliers to ag service companies.

Upon completion of this program, the student has the option to capstone into a participating four-year institution.

Architectural Technology


For students interested in architecture, RLC offers several programs and certificates to jumpstart a profession in a variety of careers, from on-site construction manager to surveyor, teacher and many more. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, students with degrees or certificates in architecture from community colleges and above will see about a 5.7 percent increase in job availablility between 2010 and 2020. Top careers included in the report are Architects, Architecture Teachers, Surveyors, and Engineers.

APPLIED SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY DIVISION

This is a two-year program leading to an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Architectural Technology. The curriculum has a 2+2 articulation agreement with Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Architectural Studies program. The curriculum also has transfer options into SIU’s Professional Construction Management program, Illinois State University’s Construction Management program and Purdue University’s Building Construction and Management program. Art


Rend Lake College offers a wide range of options for students interested in art, including a two-year Associate in Arts transfer program, a two-year Associate in Fine Arts curriculum, Art Appreciation classes which fulfill the requirement for other
degree programs, and courses in drawing, painting, printmaking, design, jewelry, sculpture and ceramics for those pursuing creative outlets.

Automotive Technology


The work of automotive service technicians and mechanics has evolved from mechanical repair to a high technology job. As a result, these workers are now usually called “technicians” in automotive services and the term “mechanic” is falling into disuse.

Today, integrated electronic systems and complex computers run vehicles and measure their performance while on the road. Technicians must have an increasingly broad base of knowledge about how vehicles’ complex components work and interact, as well as the ability to work with electronic diagnostic equipment and computer-based technical reference materials. Automotive service technicians use their high-tech skills to inspect, maintain, and repair automobiles and light trucks that run on gasoline, ethanol and other alternative fuels, such as electricity. The increasing sophistication of automotive technology now requires workers who can use computerized shop equipment and work with electronic components while maintaining their skills with traditional hand tools. Computers also have become commonplace in modern repair shops. Service technicians use readouts from computerized diagnostic testing devices. A shop’s computerized system provides automatic updates to technical manuals and unlimited access to manufacturers’ service information, technical service bulletins, and other databases which allow technicians to keep current on problem spots and to learn new procedures.

AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY — Degree

Associate in Applied Science Degree

A two-year program which leads to an Associate in Applied Science Degree, this curriculum is based on Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) standards designed to prepare the student for certification in the automotive industry. The Automotive Technology program qualifies for Master Certification from the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence. The program also is accredited by NATEF. Upon completion, the student has the option to capstone into a participating four-year institution.

Biological Sciences is a part of the Math and Sciences Division at Rend Lake College. It includes approximately 100 faculty members, 14 of whom are full-time. These faculty have expertise in areas of biological and physical sciences, math, early childhood, elementary and secondary education, business and health and P.E. Biomedical Electronics


The Associate in Applied Science degree in Biomedical Electronics equips you to become a technician and work behind the scenes in the health care field to maintain vital medical equipment.

The 65-credit-hour program will take two years, or four semesters, to complete and includes seven new biomedical electronics courses, alongside 12 health care and general education courses.

The new biomedical electronics courses were developed to provide students the skills and training to install, maintain, and repair medical equipment in hospitals, medical equipment manufacturing and service businesses, physicians’ offices, and other health care facilities. Specifically, these courses focus on electronic fundamentals, including AC, DC, and digital electronic principals, coupled with several biomedical-related courses.

The seven Biomedical Electronics courses approved are Intro to Biomedical Technology (BME1201), Biomedical Electronics Devices (BME 1202), Intro to Radiography for Biomedical Technicians (BME 1203), Biomedical Internship I and II (BME 1204 and 1206), Advanced Medical Electronics (BME 1205), and CBET Exam Prep (BME 1207).

Each course covers training in biomedical equipment fundamentals, hospital safety, regulations, medical terminology, human anatomy, physiology and biology. Students also will be required to complete two biomedical internships at medical facilities.

Kim Wilkerson, Dean of Allied Health, said the Biomedical Electronics degree is one that has been in the works for years. Thanks to funding from the Title III grant, RLC was finally able to develop curriculum and purchase equipment for the program.

“Rend Lake College has wanted to start this program for several years when a local hospital contacted us and asked for this type of training, but due to the high cost of the equipment, we were unable to move forward,” explained Wilkerson. “The Title III grant has funding to provide that equipment, and we’re elated to begin offering training to promote student success.”

Wilkerson also added the degree is a good option for those who like helping others, but who aren’t interested in working one-on-one with patients as a nurse or physician.

“It’s a great opportunity for students looking to be in the health care field who are more interested in the background functions of the facilities and helping patients indirectly through keeping up medical equipment,” she said.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for medical equipment technicians are expected to grow at a rate of 30 percent by 2022 – adding more than 12,000 jobs to the market. Median pay for a technician in 2012 was $44,570.

Associate in Applied Science Degree

This degree provides the skills and training for students to become biomedical electronics technicians. These technicians install, maintain, and repair medical equipment. Most graduates with an Associate Degree in Business choose to go on and obtain their Bachelor's Degree, while some continue further in pursuit of a Master's Degree in Business Administration (M.B.A.).

Furthering your education in business throws the doors wide open. Studies have consistently shown that your earnings increase with a college degree. According to a recent U.S. Census Bureau report, average annual earnings ranged from $18,900 for those without a high school diploma to $25,900 for high school graduates, $45,400 for college graduates and $99,300 for those obtaining professional degrees.     Distance Delivery Option

    Many people dream of earning a college degree, but the hectic schedules of work and family life make it difficult. Rend Lake College’s distance-delivered Associate in Science Degree may be the answer. This degree, which has a business focus, is made up of both online and hybrid classes to give you the flexible schedule you need. Most classes are delivered online, and the remaining hybrid classes are made up of online instruction with a small number of face-to-face meetings.

    Distance-delivered instruction can be incredibly convenient for those who have tight schedules or are unable to attend class on a fixed schedule. You’ll need to have some basic computer skills and have access to a computer and the Internet in order to take advantage of this program.     CNA - Basic Nurse Assistant


    This course is designed to prepare the individual to work in the role of a Certified Nurse Assistant in a variety of health care settings. It is approved by the Illinois Department of Public Health. Upon successful completion of classroom and clinical experiences, the student will be eligible to apply to take the state CNA registry examination. The class must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.

    MISSION STATEMENT

    The mission of the Nursing Program of Rend Lake College is to prepare competent nursing graduates in the art and science of healthcare across the lifespan.  This goal is accomplished through instruction and practice of basic and advanced nursing skills; demonstration and use of critical thinking throughout the steps of the Nursing Process; and satisfactory evaluation of each student’s performance in various clinical environments.

    PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

    The philosophy of the Rend Lake College Nursing Programs is in accordance with the college and department Mission Statements.  Every student is viewed as a unique individual with inherent worth.  Cultural diversity is embraced.

    Nursing:  Nursing is defined as both an art and a science.  Compassion is a cornerstone of nursing care delivery.  The nursing philosophy is based on Dr. Joyce Dungan’s Model of Dynamic Integration.  Dungan depicts each individual as having three integrated dimensions-body, mind, and spirit.  Changing life experiences require frequent modifications in the balance of these dimensions.  Nurses assist individuals with these transactions.

    Health:  Health is considered to be the successful integration of life’s challenges, which leads to optimum functioning at that particular moment.

    Community:  Nurses must be able to cope with an increasingly changeable, dynamic environment.  The faculty strives to prepare nurses who can accept this challenge.  The community affected by nurses expands to areas beyond the immediate geographical region.  Students at Rend Lake College accept an obligation to contribute to their community.

    Client:  Client is viewed in the broad sense as encompassing individuals and groups.  Clients use adaptation to cope with change and maintain health.  Since nurses assist with this process, students will be introduced to processes for acquisition of these skills.  As students move through the curriculum, the focus shifts to clients with more extensive needs.

    Learning:  The nursing program is based on adult learning theory.  The goal is the preparation of competent, caring healthcare workers.  The teaching-learning process operates within the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains.  Nursing education involves the integration of knowledge and experience.  Critical thinking is an integral part of nursing process application.  It involves accepting responsibility and accountability for decisions while upholding ethical and legal standards.  Learning is affected by such factors as motivation, prior experiences, and learning style.  The program remains committed to practice oriented education.

    Students attend full-time Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Both classroom and clinical are held at Studio RLC at Rend Lake Marketplace Mt.Vernon, IL. Studio RLC students are a walking ad for the Cosmetology program, Rend Lake College, and the profession. Professional ALL black dress clothing and black closed toe shoes are required.

    ESTHETICS

    NEW CLASSES STARTING: Cosmetology, Barber, and Nail Technology classes begin each fall semester. Esthetics classes will begin each fall and spring semester.

    Financial Aid

    The college tries to assist individuals who demonstrate financial need, and in most cases, financial aid is available. The college has been approved as a participating institution for grants made by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission and also is approved for federal student aid programs, including veterans benefits. Locally endowed scholarships are available to full-time students through the Rend Lake College Foundation.

    There is almost no limit to the places cosmetology can take a person. While many cosmetologists work in salons or open their own salons, many find work at spas, hotels and resorts.

    The job placement potential, along with the diverse career opportunities available within the beauty industry, makes for a very attractive consideration. In addition to hair design, our industry offers opportunities in make-up, fashion photography, product education, platform artistry and salon management.     Career opportunities in Criminal Justice generally can be categorized into five major fields: law enforcement, courts, corrections, forensic science and private security. In these areas, a multitude of challenging occupations provides for a wide range of personal and career satisfaction.     They function to prevent and control crime, shield the public from harm, provide detention and rehabilitation services and ensure equal justice for all citizens through the judicial system.

    Jobs in the criminal justice system constitute one of the largest career groups in public service, and opportunities exist on all levels of governmental jurisdiction: federal, state and local. The private sector also has shown an increasing need for criminal justice professionals. Several educational options in Criminal Justice are available to you at Rend Lake College. The Associate in Arts Degree is designed to allow you to transfer to a four-year university to continue your studies, while the Associate in Applied Science Degree prepares you to graduate and start your career. The newest addition to our program is the Cyber Forensics Specialist occupational certificate, built to train you in combating cybercrime. Certificates in Corrections, Police Science and Private Protection also are available.

    CRIMINAL JUSTICE — Associate in Arts Degree

    This two-year transfer program leads to an Associate in Arts Degree. The curriculum is designed for students pursuing a baccalaureate degree in various areas of criminal justice. It provides students with the background in criminal justice and general studies necessary for advanced work at a four-year college or university.     This two-year program leads to an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Criminal Justice (64 hours), with specializations in either police science or corrections. The curriculum is designed to provide students with a general background in all areas of criminal justice and prepare them for positions in police science, private security or corrections.
