Industrial Electronics & Maintenance Technician


RLC's Industrial Electronics and Maintenance Technician program through the Applied Science and Technology Division prepares students for a wide selection of professions in the workplace, from developing and distributing products to machining and technical repair. The job market for industrial electronics and maintenance technicians is expected to grow by 1.7 percent by 2020, states the U.S. Department of Labor.

INDUSTRIAL ELECTRONICS & MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN — Degree

Associate in Applied Science Degree

The program is designed to train students in electronics and maintenance fundamentals, the associated circuitry and components, troubleshooting and repair of systems. All courses contain a balance of the latest theory and hands-on lab experience that will develop a well-rounded and versatile technician. Students who complete the Industrial Electronics and Maintenance Technician program should be qualified for entry-level positions with a variety of industries. The knowledge gained from these courses may enable students who are pursuing a four-year degree to capstone into programs at senior-level institutions. The core technical classes may prove to be very valuable to those persons already employed in industry desiring to upgrade their skills.

INDUSTRIAL SPECIALTY

Industrial Technology has as its objective the training of qualified personnel who can develop and direct the manufacture and distribution of products. The program is a balanced curriculum of studies drawn from a variety of disciplines relating to the processes, principles of distribution and concepts of industrial management and human relations. Communication skills, humanities and social sciences are studied to develop managerial abilities. Knowledge of physical science, mathematics, design and technical skills gained from the program allows the graduate to cope with technical production problems. A total of 64 hours is required for the Associate in Science Degree.

Gainful Employment Information

This certificate will train students in the necessary skills and knowledge to seek employment as a technician responsible for the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of automated equipment. Basic principles of DC, AC and digital circuits are the cornerstone of this certificate. Skills of wiring, programming and troubleshooting programmable logic controllers are then added to the student’s basic knowledge. Robotics skills are taught, including robot set-up, flow charting, programming points, programming sequence instructions and conditional commands.

Program Outcomes

Industrial Electronics

  • Evaluate electrical circuits and components possessing the ability to identify and replace faulty components.
  • Analyze fluid power systems with the ability to determine if they are operating properly and if they are not, identify and replace defective components.
  • Utilize successfully skills in welding, machining, and mechanics to repair industrial equipment.
  • Analyze and solve problems related to computer based automated systems (Robotic and PLC).
  • Perform repairs on equipment using safe work procedures observing all applicable O.S.H.A. standards.
  • Demonstrate work ethics which will make the individual successful in the work force, and/or transfer to a senior institution.

Machining

  • Utilize all shop tools, related to machine shop work, in a correct and appropriate manner.
  • Conduct cost estimates survey for each shop project
  • Solve angle problems using trigonometry functions
  • Demonstrate safe, competent skills on lathes, mills, drill presses, etc.
