Mining Technology


Mining Technology is an Associate in Applied Science Degree for students who plan to work in an underground or surface coal mine. Students considering Mining Technology should be capable of working underground in a production environment in proximity to heavy equipment. This course of study specializes in the many facets of coal mining operations, maintenance and safety. Students may find employment in the mining industry as miners or in support roles as technicians for vendors as well as regulating agencies like MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration). Wages and benefits for the mining industry have traditionally been excellent, depending on the specific duties and employer.

Program Outcomes

Mining Technology

1. Employ mine law, safe work practices, and ethical responsibility in the workplace and demonstrate their practical application.
2. Demonstrate proper velocity measuring techniques with ventilation instruments (anemometers) and calculations in total mine unit air quantities and other ventilation controls required for proper unit ventilation.
3. Explore different types of surface and underground mine machinery and mining methods as well as principles of safe operation there in.
4. Apply roof, rib and ground control methods and proper techniques during the installation process of said controls.
5. Recognize the importance of mine safety in the aspects of first aid, fire-fighting and mine rescue.
6. Understand the varied powered systems to include; electrical, hydraulic, mechanical and maintenance of the same.

Inexperienced Miner Training (Surface and UG)

Inexperienced Miner Training (Surface and UG)

There are several Inexperienced Miner Training for Surface and Underground scheduledEach 40-hour class runs from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost of the 40-hour class is $165 (*). It is a pre-pay/pre-register class. Please contact Taylor Atchison at 618-437-5321 x1261 for registration or questions.

* The cost of Surface and Underground Inexperienced Inexperienced Miner Training for the March, April and June 2019 classes has been reduced to $105 due to RLC's receipt of the 2018-2019 Brookwood Sago Grant.

Annual Retraining

MSHA - Annual 8-hour Surface Refresher

There are no Annual Refresher Training for Surface-Only scheduled at this time. If you are interested in taking this course, please call 618-437-5321 x1261 to be placed on a class notification list.

 

 

MSHA - Annual 10-hour Surface & Underground Refresher

There are several Annual Refresher Training for Surface and/or Underground scheduled. Please call Taylor Atchison at 618-437-5321 x1261 if you would like your name placed on the sign-in sheet. The cost of the 10 hour class is $50.

Illinois Basic Electrical Safety Training

If you are interested in taking this course, please call 618-437-5321 x1261 to be placed on a class notification list. To apply for an Illinois Electrical card, you can submit an application to the State of Illinois along with a $50.00 application fee. Applications to the State of Illinois can be obtained on the website: http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/mines/MinesafetyTraining/Pages/ElectricalCertification.aspx. Requirements for students include a current MSHA electrical card or anticipated enrollment in the Illinois Mine Electrical Certification program.

There are several Inexperienced Miner Training for Surface Only scheduled. The 24-hour class runs from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. The cost of the 24-hour class is $120.
