Upward Bound
RLC's Upward Bound program is a federally funded college preparatory program for high school students.
What is TRiO?
TRIO Programs are Federal outreach and student services programs.
These programs are designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRiO includes eight programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to postbaccalaureate programs.TRIO Programs are Federal outreach and student services programs.

Our Programs
Academic Year
The ACADEMIC YEAR component emphasizes academic achievement, team building and goal setting activities that include:
- Weekly tutorial sessions at the student's target high school with Upward Bound staff members.
- Financial aid and scholarship assistance for high school seniors.
- Monthly Saturday workshops designed to foster cultural, social, community service, academic and career skills.
- Monthly stipend based on student’s grades, participation in program activities, attitude and behavior.
Summer Program
The SUMMER PROGRAM is the most intensive aspect of the Upward Bound year. This component includes:
- Six weeks of classes (Monday through Thursday) at the Rend Lake College campus. Classes include Math, English, Foreign Language, Science and various electives intended to promote academic success.
- Career Internships (Fridays); students who have completed the 10th or 11th grade are given the opportunity to job shadow a professional at an approved internship location.
- Monthly summer stipend based on student’s grades, participation in classes, attendance, activities and career internship.
- End of the year reward trip to a major city which include campus tours, special events, cultural and recreational activities.

The SUMMER BRIDGE COMPONENT gives students who have graduated from high school the previous semester the opportunity to attend classes at RLC campus. This component includes:
- Enrollment in one RLC college credit course paid for by RLC Upward Bound.
- Paid books and fees for summer RLC classes
- Monthly stipend based on student’s grades in college classes.

More Information
Eligibility
Any student—ages 13-19—attending Benton, Hamilton County, Zeigler-Royalton or Mt. Vernon high schools who has completed 8th grade but has not yet entered 12th grade is eligible.
- Demonstrate the academic potential and desire to complete a college degree.
- Meet income guidelines established by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Be a potential first-generation college student (neither parent having a bachelor's degree).
- Is a citizen or national of the United States.
- Is in the U.S. for other than a temporary purpose and provides evidence from the Immigration and Naturalization Service of his or her intent to become a permanent resident.

- Individual tutoring/advisement sessions
- Career advisement, financial aid and college application assistance

- Cultural and teambuilding activities/field trips
