INA, Ill. (March 13, 2026) — Local high school students explored career and college pathways at Rend Lake College’s 2026 Kickstart Your Journey event on March 10 and 11.
This event allowed students a first-hand look at where their future educational and career choices may lead. Throughout the event, students attended several breakout sessions covering key topics such as preparing for college, understanding financial aid and scholarships, and the education or training required for various career fields.
During the biggest session of the day, students visited a "Reality Store" in the RLC Event Center. This activity allowed students to choose a career and receive a simulated monthly salary. They visited stations representing basic living expenses, which included housing, transportation, student loans, taxes, entertainment, and more. Students also participated in a “roll the dice on life” activity, which introduced unexpected financial challenges or benefits, showcasing how unplanned events can affect financial restraints.
This hands‑on experience gave high school students an understanding on how to budget, financial responsibility, and how their career choices may impact their long‑term financial stability. RLC is proud to offer this annual event to local high school students.
