Join former RLC student Nika Lucks for our last Visiting Artist event for the 2020-21 academic year.

Lucks will be featured in a Zoom meeting on Monday, April 26, at 1 p.m. Some information on her work and history is below.

People of Speech Part One

Nika Lucks started her first photo collection, People of Speech Part One, in 2017, with two participants, $60, and a vision. She wanted to create photos that would speak to people, something that would be thought-provoking and intrusive. She had a thought: what if you had to describe yourself as an individual, by only using one word? What would that look like? What word would that be? Words are very important, and we can be very destructive with our use of words. Words can be weaponized, used for hate and to invoke fear. Words have truly tremendous power, so what if we used that power to uplift, empower, promote positivity, and be our true selves? To use as ART? What would that look like? This is what she wanted to convey with her PhotoArt, with ‘People of Speech’

Nika Lucks' ideas of creating three series of photo collections: People of Speech Part One, Two, and Three, have come to life. She has showcased and exhibited POS part One and Part Three. POS Part Two is still in the process. People of Speech is a play on the parts of speech, using nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc., where participantschoose a word that describes who they are. For People of Speech Part One, the models were Black and Brown people. Nika Lucks feels that people of color aren’t represented a lot in art. “I’m not saying there are no Black or Brown people portrayed in Art; I’m saying I don’t see enough of it. So instead of complaining about it, I decided to do something about it.”

The event is open to the public.
