INA, Ill. (September 1, 2025) — Asher Bates from Sesser has reached a big milestone in her academic and professional career. Bates graduated from Rend Lake College in May 2024 with an Associate of Arts degree and recently completed the Disney College Program.
According to the Disney College Program, it offers a "one-of-a-kind internship for college students and recent graduates. It’s a fun way to get immersed in the enchantment and fun of Disney while gaining valuable job experience, making lifelong connections."
Bates' passion for the Disney College Program was always there, but the encouragement from a few RLC staff members gave her the confidence and courage to apply.
"I've always enjoyed talking about Disney and how much I love it," shared Bates. "But Sandy West [RLC Director of Learning Resource Center] and Megan Rounds [RLC Title III Project Director] gave me the push to apply! Their encouragement gave me the confidence to pursue something outside my comfort zone, and their belief in my abilities really motivated me to go for it. Without their guidance and support, I might not have taken that first step."
While in the Disney College Program, Bates was placed in a Food & Beverage role where she was able to provide guests with quality service and memorable experiences in the Animal Kingdom park.
During her time at RLC, Bates was heavily involved on campus. She participated in theater, concert choir and worked as a student worker. These activities not only gave her confidence in using her voice and stepping into new roles, but also prepared her for a career centered on people and experiences.
"Theater showed me how to be bold, and concert choir showed me how to use my voice," said Bates. "Being a student worker taught me how to handle situations in a responsible and professional manner."

After completing the Disney College Program, Bates chose to continue working at Disney while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in hospitality management at Everglades University.
"Rend Lake College will always be the place where I started trying new opportunities," said Bates. "[RLC] helped me become a more outgoing person and taught me to make the most of my time."
