Alaina Maurer (Mt. Vernon) and Ashlyn Childers (Mt. Vernon) from the RLC women’s basketball and softball teams devoted their time to participate in the Children’s Story Time, hosted at the LRC.

Maurer is a first-year student at RLC on the women’s basketball team. She chose to volunteer because of her passion for working with children. She’s getting her start at Rend Lake College because of its comfortable atmosphere, convenient location, and affordable education. She plans to transfer to a four-year university after earning her Associates degree to major in social work; her dream is to continue to work with children and make them happy.

Childers is a second-year student at RLC on the women’s basketball and softball team. She volunteered her time to the Children’s Story Time during her first year. She enjoyed it so much that she decided to volunteer again. While she does not have a four-year university picked out yet, she wants to major in Special Education.

Student athletes, faculty, and staff are all given the option to volunteer their time to read to the children. The Director of the Learning Resource Center Sandra West said that they are currently scheduled out until April 2024 on the guest reader spots.

Christina Johnson, LRC Circulation Specialist, is a part-time worker at RLC and participates in the Children’s Story Time often.

“I absolutely love reading to the children during Story Time,” Johnson said. “The awesome Children’s Center staff amaze me with their ability to get the children settled down and in place to listen. The children are always very attentive as they listen to the stories and participate in the silly songs. I consider it quite the privilege to be able to take their little minds on a variety of adventures each time they come to the LRC. That is my favorite part of working here.”
