Changes coming to RLC’s Truck Driver Training program

January 28, 2016

INA, Ill. (Jan. 28, 2016) - Big changes are coming to Rend Lake College’s Truck Driver Training certificate program this spring, with the benefits on the student’s side. Already enrolling for classes starting Monday, Feb. 8, the program’s enrollment and course-taking process are being broken down into two parts.

The first part includes taking and passing an examination in the Commercial Driver’s License Review (TRUK 1201) class. This one-hour course is designed as test preparation for enrollees to pass the written examination to be admitted into the certificate program. This class costs $115 and has limited seating.

After passing the written test, students will embark on part two. Admitted in order of their application and payment, students will complete the remaining two courses in the certificate program: Truck Driver Training I (TRUK 1202) and II (TRUK 1203). These two courses cost $4,090 for a total program cost of $4,205. At the conclusion of the four-week training, students will be tested by the Secretary of State to receive a Class A CDL license.

“By dividing the 1201 course away from the other two, we are giving students the chance to make sure they pass the written portion of the exam before enrolling them in the remaining two classes,” explained Margo Wagner, Director of the Community and Corporate Education Division. “Because students can re-take the test after 30 days, we’re protecting them from the unnecessary charges until they’re ready to enroll in the remaining two classes.”

Students enrolled in the Truck Driver Training certificate program receive hands-on practice from experienced instructors. Graduates of the certificate program can also work toward occupational certificates in Heavy Equipment Transportation. This certificate goes more in-depth to teach students about the maintenance, repair and operation of semi-tractor trailer units. It takes two semesters of classes to complete.

To find out more about the program, contact the RLC Truck Driver Training Center at 1-877-477-4408. To enroll, contact RLC’s Community and Corporate Education Division at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1367.

A GED or high school diploma is not required for admittance into the program. Interstate students must be 21 years of age and intrastate students must be 18 years of age to enroll. Students must also be able to meet the Federal DOT physical requirement and have a valid driver’s license at the time of registration. A physical and drug screening with a DOT-certified physician designated by the college is required of all enrollees. At the time of registration, students must provide their Motor Vehicle Record documentation from a local Secretary of State facility.
