INA, Ill. (April 21, 2015) - Hundreds of grade school children and community members visited the Rend Lake College campus for the first Health and Wellness Fair last Friday, April 17. There were over 50 vendors and six speakers at the event with the goal of providing education materials about healthy lifestyles and medical information. The fair was offered thanks to a Community Engagement Award of $4,500 from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region. This project has been funded in whole or in part with Federal Funds from the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, under Contract No. HHSNâ€276â€2011â€00005C with the University of Illinois at Chicago.
RLC Nursing student Ginny Price (Opdyke), RIGHT, shows a group of grade school children a 3D diagram of a human heart before they take a journey through the Healthy Body Walk. Inside the Walk, the students learned more about the heart - as well as about other parts of the body. Over 200 students went through the Walk last Friday. Click on the image for a larger view.

Stacy Pasoni, the Healthy Hippie Chef, was the main presenter at the Health and Wellness Fair. Her presentation, called “Healthy Ways = Happy Days,†focused on her battles with health and how she came to peace with food. There were five other presentations during the fair. Students watched an interactive Jiu-Jitsu display by Jared Jessup of iQ Athletics in Waugh Gymnasium during the fair. Jessup is a Royce Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt holder who taught the students how to protect themselves from a bully using his “talk, tell, tackle†plan. Click on the image for a larger view.
