INA, Ill. (October 26, 2026) — For Rend Lake College alumnus Asa B. Newell, returning to campus is a reminder that big dreams often begin close to home. Recently, Newell returned to RLC to speak to students in Business Professor Mark Jornd’s Principles of Economics I course, sharing insights from his journey from community college student to congressional staffer.

Newell currently serves as a Staff Assistant for Congressman Mike Bost (IL-12). In his role, he supports operations across communications and legislative affairs, manages Capitol tours, oversees constituent flag requests and coordinates the congressional internship program.
Newell’s path began at RLC, where he earned an Associate of Arts in Business Finance before transferring to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and History.
"When I first attended Rend Lake, my goal was to help people in my community through financial advising," Newell said. "Over time, I realized I could make a broader impact by serving the public through government. That realization led me to switch my focus to political science and pursue a career in public service."
Reflecting on his foundation at RLC, Newell credited the faculty for giving him the encouragement and confidence to reach for ambitious goals.
"Having professors like Mark Jornd and Dr. Nathan Brouwer was a tremendous benefit to my education," Newell said. "They helped me explore future career opportunities, encouraged me to aim higher, and gave me the confidence to pursue goals I initially thought were beyond my reach."
"Although Asa’s academic journey was not always easy, he consistently demonstrated curiosity and an interest in understanding the world beyond the classroom,” said Jornd. "Those qualities, along with his willingness to continue growing and pursue a meaningful direction, have helped him find his path in public service. His story shows that students should not let early challenges define their future."
During his visit, Newell highlighted the importance of taking initiative and utilizing the resources available at RLC. His core takeaway for current students was simple: never limit your potential.
"I hope to convey that students at Rend Lake College have incredible opportunities right at their fingertips," Newell shared. "With hard work and determination, they can make a meaningful impact in their communities, pursue their ambitions and achieve success beyond what they may have once imagined."
