INA, Ill. (Oct. 14, 2014) - There won’t be a dull moment this Saturday, Oct. 18, at Rend Lake College’s first Warrior Fest. With a full line-up of events ranging from a car show to a flea market to children’s activities, there will be something for everyone in attendance.
Outside of the events, one big highlight of the day will be the awarding of two new scholarships from the RLC Foundation. The Pathway to Success Scholarships will be available for one student attending Warrior Fest and another for a student who is participating in the fest with a club or as a volunteer.
The scholarships are the result of a successful fundraiser to renovate and upgrade the walkways and front façade of the Administration Building. The RLC Foundation matched every dollar raised to establish the scholarships for future students. The scholarships will be for a current student for the spring 2015 semester or for a high school student entering RLC in the fall of 2016.
For more information about the scholarships, contact the RLC Foundation at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1214 or foundation@rlc.edu.
Flea Market
Of the three events headlining the day, two will start at 9 a.m. The Flea Market and Big Truck Day event for children will both be held in the west parking lot. Craft and flea market vendors are welcome to participate in the Flea Market event and can register online until Oct. 15 at www.rlc.edu/alumni-a-community or at the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon. Big Truck Day, children’s events
Big Truck Day at the RLC Foundation Children’s Center (RLCFCC) is an annual event that asks children to get up close and personal with a variety of large vehicles and heavy equipment. In the past, some participants of Big Truck Day included semi-trailers, tractors, dump trucks, and much more. This year, for the first time, there will also be a vehicle from the Illinois Army National Guard’s Company F, 634th Brigade Support Battalion of Mt. Vernon.
Also outside will be inflatables from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m., a visit from the Southern Illinois Miners mascot Grounder from 10 a.m. - noon, face painting by the RLC Art Club, pumpkin painting by AmeriCorps, a petting zoo by Franklin County Ag in the Classroom, and a hay ride. Parents with children are also invited to visit safety seat checks by Project Child and dental checks by Dental Safari.
Other children’s activities located in the RLCFCC include an open house to meet the teachers and staff, a silent auction to raise money for playground equipment, door prizes, and registration for spring child care. The Children’s Center has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children for more than a decade.
