What is a 1098-T?
A tax document that we are required to issue to certain students each year. This form's primary purpose is to report the total amount of Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses (QTRE) the student paid during the calendar year, which is shown in Box 1, and the total amount of scholarships or grants they received, which is shown in Box 5. This information helps taxpayers determine their eligibility to claim valuable education tax credits on their federal income tax return, such as the American Opportunity Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit. In essence, the 1098-T is the official school-issued document that helps facilitate claiming a significant tax break for higher education costs. It’s important to note that RLC does NOT give tax advice, if students have questions regarding how to report what the 1098-T reports they must ask a tax specialist. We can assist in providing statements or receipts, but it’s up to the students how they report everything.
Taking advantage of the electronic 1098-T service not only saves you time, it helps RLC reduce costs and lessen its impact on the environment.
