Henson, Minor, Newell on ballot for Student Trustee at RLC

Rend Lake College students will vote for their next Student Trustee in the annual election, March 6 and 7. The Student Trustee sits on the college's Board of Trustees and carries an advisory vote in all actionable matters. 

There are three candidates running this year
Remington Henson (Wayne City), Raquel Minor (Mt. Vernon), and Katie Newell (Waltonville). 

Henson is a 2018 graduate of Wayne City High School. He is pursuing degrees in Agricultural Business, Agricultural Production and Agricultural Management at RLC. Henson plans to transfer to Murray State University for his bachelor's degree in Agricultural Business. 

"I chose RLC because it is a very good community college that is in our area and offers an excellent Agriculture program."

He played an active role in his local 4-H and FFA programs at Wayne City. "Both allowed me to contribute to my community and take on various leadership roles. Running for student trustee is another opportunity for me to do that. Vote for me because I can be a responsible and dependable voice for the student body."

Minor is a 2018 graduate of Mt. Vernon Township High School. She is studying in the Pre-Veterinary Medicine program at RLC and wants to transfer to either Southern Illinois University at Carbondale or the University of Illinois. 

Minor said she chose RLC because she wanted to stay close to home and loved the idea of going to a smaller school. "... The teachers are more focused on student success and are willing to help when you ask for help," she said.

After serving as a guest speaker at a regional meetings for community college boards last fall, Minor was motivated to run for RLC Student Trustee. "I decided I wanted to take part in the meetings for next year. I would like your votes so I can have an opportunity to represent all of the students at the board meetings and have a great opportunity to experience formal meetings."

Newell is a 2018 graduate of Waltonville High School. She is studying Agricultural Business at RLC with plans to transfer her degree to the Agronomy program at Murray State University. 

"Rend Lake has always been my top option for furthering my education for many reasons," Newell said. "Not only is RLC affordable and close to home, but I chose RLC because I had always heard great things about the Ag Program and the staff here."

She chose to run for student trustee because she believes in serving her community and plans to return to the area after college. "If elected to the board, I would be honored to be a part of making decisions to improve the college and community now, and for generations to come. I am also very interested in learning ... what goes on with the administrative side of things at Rend Lake College. 

"My peers should vote for me because I know I will be a great representative for their interests. I am a very personable and friendly person and I want to do my part in helping to make everyone’s experience at Rend Lake College a great one. I enjoy spending time on campus, meeting new people, and also attending the events RLC puts on for the community. As student trustee, I will be the voice of student opinions and concerns at board meetings and will make sure students’ input is brought to light. Also, I have previous experience with holding office, so I am aware of the responsibility and work it takes to be in a leadership role. I would greatly appreciate my peers’ vote this upcoming election for the office of Student Trustee."

FAQ (Student Trustee Election):

Who can vote? Any currently registered RLC student may vote. 

How do I vote? All voting is done at the Academic Advisement Center in the Administration Building, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Bring your Student ID. 

What if I can't make it? Absentee voting takes place on the day prior to the first day of the election. Absentee voting is also done in the Academic Advisement Center.
