Naturalization Ceremony at RLC welcomes 55 new citizens

January 29, 2016

INA, Ill. (Jan. 29, 2016) - Fifty-five individuals completed their dream to become United States citizens this morning during a Naturalization Ceremony at Rend Lake College. These new citizens came from 28 different countries across the globe, with the oldest at 92-years-old, to take the oath of citizenship in RLC's Theatre. Acting United States Attorney James L. Porter presented the candidates for naturalization and the Honorable Philip M. Frazier, United States Magistrate Judge, administered the oath.

Event speaker A. Courtney Cox, former United States Attorney, gave advice to the new citizens and encouraged them to get involved in their local communities.

"American voices are loud. These loud voices are the voices of freedom. Please lend your voice to the voice of your fellow citizens. Speak your peace - it is your right and your duty," said Cox. "Join me today, my fellow citizens, to vow to protect and defend the rule of law in this great nation. This is the day I ask you to join your fellow citizens in the eternal project of renewing our great nation from within."

He continued, "The truth is, a vast majority of Americans recognize what we all know to be true. We are a proud nation of immigrants. We always have been and we always will be. This country has been blessed with the constant infusion of new people like you from all over the world, who brought their languages, their heritage, and their cultures with them. Today, it is you who bless us. You enrich our country with your citizenship. We welcome you with open arms. The greatness of America truly lies in the hearts of its citizens, like you."
