INA, Ill. (May 14, 2025) — Rend Lake College is proud to announce David Junkins as the recipient of the 2025 Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Member of the Year award. A devoted educator, alumnus and mentor, Junkins has left a lasting impact on both the classroom and the community.

"The award was unexpected and an honor," said Junkins. "I appreciate all the support I have received from administration, my peers, and support staff during the past 23 years at Rend Lake College."
Junkins, a proud graduate of the Class of 1971, began his academic career at RLC before pursuing a Master’s degree and embarking on a distinguished career as a social worker for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. Though his well-earned retirement could have marked the end of a fantastic career, he chose to return to his alma mater to share his real-world expertise and inspire future generations.
Junkins' efforts go far beyond the classroom. He has played a pivotal role in keeping the Sociology Department thriving at RLC, teaching courses such as Social Problems, Social Work, Sociology and Marriage and the Family. Whether face-to-face or through remote learning, he continuously adapts his teaching methods to connect with students.
“David Junkins is, without a doubt, one of the best educators I have encountered, not only during my time at Rend Lake College but also throughout my academic career,” shared Kennedy Stults (Jewett), a sophomore studying chemistry. “Not only does he value education, but he values all of his students as individuals. David never failed to make his classroom an enjoyable environment.”
Over the years, Junkins has earned well-deserved accolades for his leadership and dedication. He was named RLC’s very first Alumnus of the Year in 1982. He was also recognized for supervising the DCFS Salem field office in achieving full accreditation from the Council on Accreditation.
