INA, Ill. (Feb. 10, 2015) - Take the first step in online education with Rend Lake College’s new orientation program, Online Navigation Essentials (ONE). RLC students enrolling in online or hybrid courses this fall will get to experience the world of online learning before ever accessing their credit course.
Developed by RLC’s Online Learning Committee, ONE 1500 is designed to prepare students for online or hybrid courses by providing an introduction to the software and terminology, as well as providing helpful hints and tips to succeed. RLC students will be required to complete ONE prior to gaining access to their online or hybrid course.
“Rend Lake College has implemented this new orientation for online and hybrid students to help them be more successful and understanding of the online courses they choose to take,†said Chris Kuberski, RLC Vice President of Academic Instruction. “ONE will be a great way to help students recognize if online or hybrid courses are a good option for them and for their education before they are placed into the course.â€
At RLC, an online class is defined as a course that is completely online, without any face-to-face classroom, laboratory, clinical, or field meeting time required. Similarly, a hybrid course is one in which students substitute portions of classroom, laboratory, clinical, or field meeting time with an online component.
As students complete the ONE program, they will experience a series of self-paced lessons and activities necessary for online learning. Regardless of previous experience in an online environment, successful completion of ONE 1500 will be required for every student. There will not be any fees or tuition required for ONE, and no credit hours will be awarded. Students may also use the open computer lab in the Learning Resource Center to complete the program and subsequent online or hybrid courses.
RLC Graphic Design student Marisa Uhls of Mt. Vernon designed the logo for the ONE program. The Online Learning Committee selected Uhls’ design as the winner of a program-wide competition and she was awarded a gift certificate to be used at the RLC Bookstore.
“I’m excited to have won,†said Uhls. “I knew I wanted to do something computer-related, so I incorporated the wireless image with the word ONE. I think it turned out really well.â€
