Only 11 Summer Kids Camps left this season at RLC

INA, Ill. (July 16, 2014) - Time is running short to register for the 11 remaining Summer Kids Camps at Rend Lake College. Brochures with registration forms and camp calendars are available for download at www.rlc.edu/kidscamps.

Very limited spaces are open in Ag Camp, designed for kids between kindergarten and third grade. The camp will cover five areas of agriculture: farming, fiber, flowers, food, and forestry. In these areas, campers will discover animals, plants, and soil science with a horticulturist, as well as participate in outdoor activities. Ag Camp meets from 9 a.m. - noon, Monday-Thursday, July 21-24 in the Applied Science Center, Room 103. It costs $30 per camper.

Awesome Animal Art is divided into two age groups to work with different mediums to learn basic art skills. First through third graders will meet from 1 - 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, July 28-31, in the Vocational Building, Room 118. Fourth through sixth graders will meet those mornings from 9 a.m. - noon. The cost of the camp is $60.

For the cooking enthusiast, Chefs of Tomorrow will meet to discuss dinner preparation from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. July 25 and desserts during the same time on Aug. 1 in the Culinary Lab in the RLC Student Center. With only a few spots open for both sessions, those enrolled can look forward to learning the basics of safety while preparing a meal from beginning to end with the RLC Culinary Arts instructors. At the end of the camp, students will be able to take home samples of their culinary creations. The cost of each day is $35.

Create your own comic book and superhero during Comic Book Art Camp, scheduled for Monday-Thursday, July 21-24 in the Vocational Building, Room 118. Fourth through eighth graders will meet from 9 a.m. - noon and first through third graders will pick up in the afternoon, from 1 - 4 p.m. Comic Book Art Camp costs $60 per camper.

Creative Writing will offer the basics and tips to good writing from a published author through exercises and projects focused on prose and poetry. The camp is scheduled to last from 9 a.m. - noon, Monday-Thursday, July 28-31, in the Science Building, Room 106, and is geared toward students between fourth and sixth grades. It costs $60.

It’s hands-on experiments galore in Garbage Pail Science, aimed at campers in grades 1-6. The camp will meet in the Historic Schoolhouse on the Ina campus to get interactive in a number of different projects. Camp is scheduled for 1 - 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, July 28-31 and costs $60 per camper.

Everything a kid wants to know about gardening will be taught during Gardening Safari in the RLC Greenhouse and Community Garden. Topics will include learning how to plant seeds, to use cuttings from plants, about foliage and plant leaves, and even gathering fresh produce to take home. Campers are encouraged to dress for the weather as it will be outside, with closed-toed shoes, insect repellant, and sunscreen. Gardening Safari will meet from 9 a.m. - noon Monday-Thursday, July 28-31 in the Applied Science Center, Room 103, before heading out to the garden. It is for students in fourth through seventh grades and costs $60 per camper.

Only a few places remain in Martial Arts this summer for students in grades 1-8. The camp will introduce the campers to a number of different martial arts trainings to improve their health and coordination. Martial Arts will meet from 1 - 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, July 28-31 in the Sports Center on the RLC Campus. The cost of the camp is $60.

Outdoor-enthusiasts between second and ninth grades can get excited about spending a week at Benton’s Camp Manitowa for Outdoor Adventure. The camp is scheduled from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, July 21-24 and July 28-31. During the week-long camp, students will take part in arts and crafts, challenge courses, zip lining, team-building exercises, kayaking, fishing, and hiking.  Kids are asked to bring a sack lunch and drinks, sunscreen, insect repellant, and swimming attire. The cost of the camp is $155, though siblings may attend for a discounted rate of $100 each. Campers attending both weeks also receive the $100 discounted rate.

Campers can learn the basics of Sign Language this summer, including the alphabet, colors, numbers, words, and phrases. Campers in grades 1-8 will meet from 1 - 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, July 28-31. Sign Language camp costs $60.

Starts and Turns, the summer camp focused on swimming starts, turns, and practice strokes, will meet from 1 - 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, July 21-22, in the RLC Aquatics Center. Competitive swimmers between grades one and eight are invited to attend. The camp costs $30 each.

Payments may be made by check, money order, credit or debit cards, or cash, and must be received at the time of registration. Parents and guardians are responsible for all transportation arrangements to and from camp.
