REND LAKE COLLEGE BOARD OF TRUSTEES MARCH 9, 2021 MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

The Rend Lake College Board of Trustees learned about the appointment of Nick Wimber as the new student trustee during its Tuesday meeting.
 
Wimber, a freshman from Henderson, Ky., was recently elected as the incoming RLC student trustee. Wimber is the son of Laurie and the late Steve Wimber, and he will be seated at the April meeting. He is also a member of the RLC Warrior baseball team.
 
Wimber will succeed current Student Trustee Dakota Tate, a student in agriculture.
 
Vocational Building roof bid accepted
 
The board also accepted the base bid to replace the roof of the Vocational building. A total of five bids were received, and the low bid was through D7 Roofing in New Baden for $102,300. The project will be funded through PHS Levy funds.
 
New and improved phone system coming soon
 
Also during the meeting, the board ratified the purchase of a new Cisco phone system through World Wide Technology at $277,718.61. The current phone system is no longer reliable, and the purchase will improve college operations and efficiency, provide employees with updated tools and give callers a better experience. The project is being funded with bond proceeds.
 
Fox hired as Director of Food Service
 
Alan Fox, Sr. was appointed Director of Food Services, effective March 15. The RLC alum earned his Associate Degree in Applied Science in Culinary Arts Management In 2015. He is currently the custodial supervisor at RLC. He had previously worked in Shipping and Receiving at RLC and as a shift supervisor for Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.
 
New online classes and course prefixes approved
 
Three new online classes will be developed and ready for Fall 2021. The board approved CNS 1212 Computer Hardware and Operating Systems, CSCI 1260 Intro to Programming .NET Platform, and MUSI 1110 lntroduction to American Music. The prefix of four existing courses was updated. INEL 1250 to IST 1250, INEL 1265 to IST 1265, INEL 1291 to IST 1291, and CNS 1240 to IST 1240. These developments improve the college's educational offerings and support efforts to enhance the quality of instruction.
 
RLC entering Debt Recovery Program with IL Comptroller
 
 The RLC board entered into an intergovernmental agreement with the Illinois Office of the Comptroller, effective March 9, to assist in recovering outstanding student accounts. The Debt Recovery Program is a common tool used by community colleges, cities, and other units of local governments across the state. RLC has not used the program in the past. The college will begin submitting past-due amounts to the program. Delinquent students will be notified at least four times by mail before balances are submitted to the program.
 
Post-retirement benefit plan to be created for RLC employees
 
The board approved a voluntary, one-time, post-retirement, benefit plan. Effective March 9, the new benefit plan will be for qualifying employees who agree to retire on or before June 30, 2021. Post-retirement benefits will be based upon the number of years of service an employee has with the college and FY2021 base salary.
 
In other business, the board:
  • approved a second reading revising the RLC vacation policy, effective March 9.
