Rend Lake College Board of Trustees May 11, 2021 Meeting Highlights

May 12, 2021

Another step toward making new dining options on the Rend Lake College campus a reality was approved Tuesday night, as the Board of Trustees agreed to accept bids for a necessary piece of equipment during its regular monthly meeting.

The board granted permission to advertise for bids for the installation of the Range Hood System for the RL Café. The range hood system will come installed and equipped with a fire suppression system, which is necessary for the functionality of the RL Café.

Agreement reached with Darktrace

The board granted permission to enter into a 48-month agreement with Darktrace Holdings Limited, effective May 11. Darktrace is a cybersecurity software that is intended to help identify malware, ransomware, phishing and other unwanted cyber attacks. It sits atop the RLC network and monitors for activity that may be an anomaly to normal network traffic. The software identifies and addresses the college’ IT Department, who can then determine whether the activity is safe. Over time, the process will become more automated as it learns from feedback, and the IT staff will be able to respond autonomously.

The 48-month agreement costs $388,224, and it will be paid in annual installments through tort funds.

Longtime Ag Mechanics Professor retires

The board accepted the retirement resignation of Ag Mechanics and Diesel Technology Professor Mike Burris. Burris’ last day at RLC will be June 28. For 21 years, Burris balanced a schedule of teaching with planting and harvesting on the farm. He started at RLC in 1999, and he has really enjoyed seeing what new crop of students will show up to his class. He has said that he especially likes instructing students who come to class ready to work. In his retirement, Burris plans to continue farming and help mentor the next generation of agricultural students through his work with the Hamilton County FFA, particularly one member - Mike’s grandson, Marshall Schuster.

Personnel

Permission was granted to expand the duties and revise the job description of Accounts Receivable Specialist Emily DeForest. To better fit the needs of the college, additional duties have been assigned to the position. The changes will be in effect on July 1.

Curriculum changes approved

The board approved seven new courses, effective June 1. The courses are AOT 1201 Applicator Maintenance, AOT 1202 Ag Retail Sales, AOT 1203 Field Computer Systems, AOT 1204 Field Calibration of Equipment, AOT 1205 Pesticide Safety and AOT 1206 Applicator Equipment Operations, among other curriculum changes.

In other business, the board…

  • Heard a presentation about the MyRLC app, which was developed by RLC alum Jake Fraizer.
  • Approved a second reading revisions to its terms of working remotely for full-time employees, effective May 11.
  • Heard a first reading revising its policy for background checks for potential and current RLC employees.
