MT. VERNON - For high school students in Mt. Vernon and the surrounding area who need make-up credit, Rend Lake College will start its annual free summer school program soon at the RLC MarketPlace in Mt. Vernon.
This program is free, with no tuition cost to the students. Two program options are available. The first begins Monday, June 3, and runs through Thursday, June 20. The second runs Monday, June 24, through Friday, July 12. In each case, the morning session runs from 8 a.m. to noon, and the afternoon session runs from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students will register during the first day of classes at the MarketPlace.
Courses available include English I-IV (first and second semester of each); Pre-Algebra, Algebra I-II, and Geometry (first and second semester of each); Government; Consumer Education; Physical Science; Earth Science; and Biology I (first and second semester). Students in Government classes will be given both the federal and state Constitution tests.
This is the regular program offered by RLC to high school students in Mt. Vernon who have failed a class. This free program features small class sizes and real student-teacher interaction. All classes are taught by high school instructors. Students can make up one-half to two credits during the sessions.
“We continue to offer this program in Mt. Vernon because it is important to offer that second chance to local students who were unable to pass one or more classes,†said Dr. Walt Montgomery, Director of Alternative and Optional Education at Rend Lake College. “A quality education should be available to everyone, and this program helps reach that goal by assisting those students who may have stumbled along the way.â€
Montgomery said he already has received several inquiries from parents and students about enrolling. He said parents appreciate the fact that there will be a qualified teacher in the room with their child and that the students will get the individual attention they need.
Any Mt. Vernon or area high school student in need of make-up credit can register for this free program. For more information, contact Montgomery at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1823, or at montgomery@rlc.edu.
