INA, IL (Dec. 22, 2021) - Rend Lake College is partnering with five local libraries to host adult education distance learning classes beginning in the New Year.
The classes, which will start this January, will provide an opportunity to attend GED classes without having to leave their community.
The libraries included in this partnership are Benton Public Library, Sesser Public Library, McCoy Memorial Library in McLeansboro, C.E. Brehm Library in Mt. Vernon and Kissner Public Library in Wayne City.
The RLC Skills Center will supply the laptops and study materials for the students while the libraries will provide the WiFi to stay connected as well as a quiet place to study. The students will log online, where they will be able to interact with classmates and the instructor. They will also have the opportunity to check out a laptop to use outside the class time.
The partnership expands adult education offerings at Rend Lake College by giving students a more convenient way to fill in the gaps they need to advance in their careers.
“We're so excited about this partnership,†said Christina Manchen, Director of the RLC Skills Center. “Transportation can be difficult for many adult education students. Offering distance learning classes will allow students to attend a 'live' class at a nearby location.â€
The local libraries are also working with the RLC Raise A Warrior Microscholarship program by offering volunteer opportunities. The program allows in-district students in third grade through high school to earn up to $2,000 for future enrollment at RLC by logging in their community service hours.
“In addition to the volunteer opportunities for older students we are also awarding microscholarship dollars for younger students in this partnership,†said RLC Community Outreach Specialist Kristen Garner. “Younger students will be encouraged to utilize their libraries by getting their own library card, checking out books, and attending educational programs at the library. “
Students can earn money towards the microscholarship for both community service and participating in educational activities.
Rend Lake College’s Skills Center provides relevant and accessible educational opportunities for adult learners to help them succeed at work, home and their communities. In addition to GED services, the center has a curriculum designed to help with basic skills in academic subjects such as reading, writing and math and life skills in parenting and workforce preparation.
