RLC’s Warrior Fest continuing to expand; events scheduled for Sept. 19

September 4, 2015

INA, Ill. (Sept. 4, 2015) - Details are being finalized for Rend Lake College’s second Warrior Fest on the Ina campus, set to return from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Similar to last year, the event will feature many different children’s activities, a car show, a flea market, scholarship opportunities, and much more.

Scholarship Opportunities

Outside of the events, one big highlight of the day will be the awarding of a Pathway to Success Scholarship from the RLC Foundation. The Pathway to Success Scholarship will be available for one student attending or volunteering at Warrior Fest - those volunteering with a club or organization will be entered into the drawing and those who attend the event will need to complete a scavenger hunt card by visiting various booths.

The $500 scholarship is the result of a successful fundraiser to renovate and upgrade the walkways and front façade of the Administration Building. The RLC Foundation matched every dollar raised to establish the scholarship for future students. The scholarship must be used for the spring 2016 semester.

For more information about the scholarships, contact the RLC Foundation at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1214 or foundation@rlc.edu.

Other Activities

RLC’s Culinary Arts and Radiology programs will offer food and beverages throughout the day. The Radiology Club will sell donuts and coffee for the early-morning attendees. The Culinary Arts students will take over for lunch, offering a twist to the typical festival cuisine.

Returning to the typical food menu this year are loaded nachos and pickled jalapenos, and bratwursts with peppers or sauerkraut, plus sides, beverages, and desserts. The student-created menu will add “Bobs and Bowls:” your choice of fried rice, white rice, coleslaw, or German potato salad combined with your choice of beef, chicken, vegetable, or fruit kababs. Teriyaki bowls and grilled chicken entrées will also be available.

“We know some attendees will be expecting the usual festival food, and we will have some of that, but this is also part of a class in the RLC Culinary Arts program, so we’re going to do a spin on the usual. The students want to show off a bit of their culinary skills,” said Robert Wilson, Culinary Arts Lead Associate Professor. “One of those twists will be ‘Bobs and Bowls’ where Warrior Fest attendees make their own combination.”

Additional events and happenings are being planned for Warrior Fest, including chair massages by the RLC Therapeutic Massage program and hand massages by the Studio RLC, both near the clock tower; a gaming party by Matt Jackson of Ultimate Gaming Championship in the Student Center; book and pumpkin crafts by Beth Mandrell, RLC Reference Librarian; and much more.

For more information about Warrior Fest, contact RLC’s Community and Corporate Education Division at 618-437-5321, Ext. 1714 or 1367.
