RLC welcomes IL Treasurer Frerichs to campus

August 23, 2019

INA, Ill. (Aug. 23, 2019)
Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs made a stop at Rend Lake College on Thursday.

Frerichs toured campus with stops at the campus Learning Resource Center and Career Technical Education Success Center. He spoke to students and faculty in an accounting class and the welding lab, before seeing where administrators would like to build a proposed Allied Health Center.

In Mark Jornd's accounting class, Frerichs shared his background
growing up in Gifford, Ill., where he attended Rantoul Township High School before graduating from Yale University, working in law and public relations, and serving as state senator for eight years. The students had a number of questions for Frerichs. He talked about Illinois investments and bridges, as well as Illinois' unclaimed property website where the Treasurer's office has returned over $703 million in assets since 2015. One student in the class said he recovered money from the site.

Frerichs told the students they should work hard pursuing what they like to do.

"What I've found is if you do something you like, you'll likely do it well," he told them. "You'll likely put a lot of time and effort into it."
