INA, Ill. (April 23, 2015) - Whether you’re a professional, teacher, caregiver, parent, or friend, Rend Lake College has the seminar for you to both help your loved one and find balance in your life through two mental health presentations later this year.
The first presenter is Kim Olver, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, who will cover “Success Strategies for Working with Individuals with Mental Health Concerns†from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 19 in the RLC Theatre. Attendees will hear about different human behavior and learn directions to use that behavior to maximize an individual’s success.
With an interactive part of her presentation, Olver will help others recognize the deficit needs in those with whom they work and begin to help them meet their needs in a responsible way, regardless of behavior. Participants will also practice the tenets of Choice Theory psychology that will assist them in managing their own frustrations when dealing with challenging behaviors in those they serve.
Registration for Olver’s presentation will begin at 7:45 a.m. in the Theatre Lobby. Attendance costs $15 per person and includes lunch. Participants can attend for professional or personal development, and will earn 6 CEUs or CPDUs, and 0.5 credit hours for attending as professionals.
The second presentation - called “Shifting Dementia Care from Crisis to Comfort†- will be led by Lori La Bey, the founder and CEO of Alzheimer’s Speaks, from 8:15 a.m. - 4:15 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 6 in the RLC Theatre. Attendees will learn how they can drive change in caregiving and have a positive impact on those dealing with dementia.
La Bey will start the presentation with a lesson on the definition of “dementia-friendly,†and what it means on a global scale. Information will be provided on what resources are available to reduce costs, alleviate stress, and build community, while helping caregivers and dementia sufferers find balance and live with purpose.
As the daughter of a woman who has suffered from dementia for the past 30 years, La Bey’s advocacy group Alzheimer’s Speaks focuses on creating change and providing programs that shift caregiving from crisis to comfort. Participants who attend will walk away with tools they can use immediately to find the balance when caring for another with dementia.
Registration for La Bey’s presentation will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Theatre Lobby. Attendance costs $25 for personal development or $40 for professional development and includes lunch. Participants will earn 6 CEUs and 0.5 credit hours for attending as professionals. The presentation is sponsored by RLC and the Area Health Education Center.
