FROSEN - Alexis Hayes, a 16-year-old student at Mt. Vernon Township High School, pulls her yellow rose from the dry ice Thursday at Associate Professor Greg Hollmann's makeshift laboratory in the Rend Lake College gym. Students were finishing lunch and heading to the awards ceremony at the 2013 Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering Regional hosted by RLC. Students from 10 high schools in the district competed in the Academic Challenge for a chance to advance to sectionals. Looking on are Christopher High School students Kortne Bailey (LEFT) and Kalyn Hubbard. Complete results from the WYSE regional will be released by RLC officials at a later time.
