INA - Students and staff at the Rend Lake College Foundation Children’s Center closed their annual celebration of National Week of the Young Child with a sock hop today at the center in Ina.
Clad in ‘50s attire, children participated in activities with their parents and center staff, and were treated to milkshakes, candy and more while music from the ‘50s and ‘60s played in the background.
Established by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs.
NAEYC is the world’s largest early childhood education association, with nearly 100,000 members and a network of over 300 local, state, and regional affiliates. The center at Rend Lake College is accredited through NAEYC.
Each day throughout the week was designated for appreciating groups who influence the children at the center. Each day also had its own soundtrack from varying genres of music - country, bluegrass and folk, jazz and blues, polka and 1950s-60s, respectively.
Monday: Parent Appreciation Day. Parents were served breakfast and students from each classroom made something special for mom and dad.
Tuesday: Early Childhood Education students Appreciation Day. Center students made cards and snack baskets for college students who train at the center every day.
Wednesday: Staff Appreciation Day. Parents and their children sent notes of appreciation to staff members who were treated to a pot luck lunch and secret sister gifts.
Thursday: Child Appreciation Day. The kids enjoyed making special arts and crafts in class and received gifts from their teachers.
Throughout the week, those who went into the center were able to take part in a staff baby photo contest. The person who identified the most staff members by their baby photos was Karla Wilkins of Sesser. She received a door prize for her talent.
