INA, Ill. (February 25, 2026) — Rend Lake College is proud to celebrate our President, the newly conferred Dr. Lori Ragland for recently earning her Doctor of Education (EdD) in Educational Leadership from Capella University. She utilized this journey to integrate academic research with the real-world institutional challenges facing community colleges today.

Earning the degree was a significant achievement for Ragland, who spent the last three years balancing the responsibilities of college leadership with a demanding academic schedule. For her, the process was about more than a personal milestone; it was an opportunity to lead by example. This firsthand experience as a student helped Ragland identify innovative, research-driven ways to strengthen RLC’s programs and better serve the evolving needs of the regional employers.
Advancing in Competency-Based Education
Ragland shared that she chose Capella University’s doctoral program because of its strong foundation in competency-based education.
“This competency-based focus was especially important to me since Rend Lake College is actively developing competency-based delivery models of our own,” said Ragland. “I wanted to gain firsthand experience in this modality so I could better understand how learners navigate it, what supports are needed, and how assessments are structured.”
Ragland noted that going through Capella University’s competency-based program has strengthened her ability to make informed decisions and support RLC’s transition toward innovative and flexible learning pathways. She specifically utilized Capella’s FlexPath option, which allowed her to have a deeper appreciation and understanding for RLC students.
“Balancing coursework, work obligations, and personal responsibilities reminded me of the very struggles our learners face every day,” said Ragland. “This experience strengthened my empathy as a leader and reinforced my commitment to ensuring Rend Lake College continues providing flexible, supportive pathways that meet students where they are, providing them with the opportunity to be successful.”
From Education to RLC
Ragland’s doctoral work was far from theoretical. Her Applied Improvement Project addressed RLC’s enrollment and the alignment between traditional academic programs and workforce needs. The project explored how structured professional development could prepare faculty and staff to design workforce-aligned micro-credentials, particularly short-term, skills-based learning opportunities that support adult learners and regional employers.
“Ultimately, the project demonstrated that targeted professional development can serve as an effective lever for institutional innovation, increased responsiveness to the workforce, and expanded access for nontraditional learners,” shared Ragland.
By focusing on applied research, Ragland has reinforced her commitment to leading with integrity, evidence, and a deep understanding of the students and communities RLC serves.
Importance of Higher Education
Outside of her own achievement, Ragland has been a steadfast advocate for continuing education beyond high school. Whether through short-term credentials, technical certificates, apprenticeships, or advanced degrees, she believes education provides the essential foundation for career success and a better future.
“In today’s rapidly changing economy, employers increasingly value specific skills, industry-recognized competencies, and the ability to adapt,” Ragland shared. “Postsecondary education equips individuals with career-ready technical and durable skills, critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, stronger earning potential, and increased access to stable employment and advancement.”
Dr. Ragland’s journey serves as a reminder that the door to opportunity is always open through higher education.
