Board of Trustees Special Meeting - April 25, 2023

Meeting Highlights

Daniels, Coy seated as new Trustees; Dorris to serve another term

Ron Daniels (Belle Rive) and Joseph Coy (Wayne City) were seated as new members of the Board of Trustees. Daniels and Coy, along with current member Brian Dorris (Sesser), were each elected to a six-year term on April 4. Trustees Randy Rubenacker and John Kabat chose not to seek another term and were each honored for 12 years of service at the April 11 board meeting

Daniels, 58, is a retired educator of 30 years — most recently for a decade as the Regional Superintendent of Schools for Clinton, Jefferson, Marion and Washington counties. He was also principal at Mt. Vernon Township High School, as well as principal and superintendent at Waltonville schools. In retirement Daniels operates a livestock farm with his family in Belle Rive where he served as deacon and song leader at Belle Rive Baptist Church. He and his wife, Delores, were married for 35 years before she passed away in 2021. They raised two children — a daughter who is a veterinarian for The Maschhoffs and a son who works for Hamson Agriculture as a chemical applicator.

Daniels is following in the footsteps of his father-in-law, the late Marvin Scott, who served on the RLC Board of Trustees for 36 years.

"I know education. I know leadership. I know the importance of community college to our area," Daniels said. "It gives opportunities to our kids and our families to really get a step up and get ahead. Whether it's from a certificate or on up to that associate degree, I think it really makes a difference. And with my background in education I know I can bring a lot of understanding of what's already going on and what needs to continue to be available to our kids."

Coy, 35, is a former student at RLC who now helps run the family farm in Wayne County where they grow wheat, corn, beans and milo. He recently started working with former RLC Student Trustee Colt Henson on new technology that uses drones to apply chemicals. Coy said he likes to be involved in things that affect his community and family, and saw the RLC Board as another way to do be involved and make a difference. He and his wife, Whitney, are raising three daughters, ranging from first through eighth grade at Wayne City Schools where Whitney works as a special education aide. Coy has served eight years — four as chair — on the Board for Wayne City K-12 Schools. He's been a volunteer firefighter for 16 years, and served on the Wayne County Board and 911 Board.
