12/16/2005

From scrapbooking to sign language, enhance your mind with these spring offerings in Christopher through the Rend Lake College Community Education Department.

“Sign Language: Hands that Talk for Kids” is a fun sign language class for children in first through sixth grades. The alphabet, colors, numbers and animals will be taught. Children will learn to spell names and communicate with others using their hands. The class will be held in two Saturday sessions, Feb. 18 and Feb. 25, and will meet from 9 to 11 a.m. each session in the Christopher Civic Center. The course costs $12.

New this year in Christopher is “Scrapbooking for Kids,” set for 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 18, at the Christopher Civic Center. Youngsters will learn to use various tools in this fun-filled class, and will create their own 5-inch-by-5-inch paper scrapbook with a birthday theme. Children should bring six pictures and any birthday party memorabilia, such as napkins or invitations, for example, to personalize their books. Pictures and mementos can be added later. The class costs $14.

Create an electronic scrapbook using your own pictures and music with “Musical Memory Keepsake,” a new Christopher offering set for 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 20, in the Christopher Community High School library. Participants will use Microsoft PowerPoint to create a memorable picture slide show set to music. Students should bring at least 20 pictures and some music to class on a compact disc or USB flash drive. A USB flash drive is required to store the finished keepsake and can be bought for $20 from the instructor if preordered at the time of registration. Course cost is $12.
