Summer Kids Camps offer range of activities, hobbies on Ina campus

INA, Ill. (May 1, 2014) – No matter the interest, no matter the age, Rend Lake College has a camp for every child this summer, from culinary arts to agriculture to martial arts, and everything in between. Join our staff in exploring new worlds on the RLC Ina campus.

RLC’s Community and Corporate Education Division is bringing back some old favorites and launching some new activities with this year’s line-up. These Summer Kids Camps are great for parents looking for something fun for the kids to do this summer, and the college will have more information coming soon.   • Ag Camp: for grades K-3 at $30 per camper
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, July 21-24 in the Applied Science Center, Room 103.
    Ag Camp will cover five areas of agriculture: farming, fiber, flowers, food, and forestry. Campers will discover animals, plants and soil science with a horticulturist and participate in outdoor activities.
  • Awesome Animal Art
    For grades 1-3 at $60 per camper:
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, June 23-26 or 1 – 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, July 28-31 in the Vocational Building, Room 118.
    For grades 4-6 at $60 per camper:
    1 – 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 23-26 or 9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, July 28-31 in the Vocational Building, Room 118.
    Campers will practice with different mediums and learn basic art skills with animal art.
  • Blastoff!: for grades 4-8 at $75 per camper
    1 – 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, July 21-24 at the Historic Schoolhouse on Ina campus
    Campers will develop a strong sense of self and connection with their environment, and build and launch their own rocket.
  • Castles, Catapults, and Coat of Arms: for grades 1-6 at $100 per camper
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, June 16-19 in the Applied Science Center, Room 103.
    Campers will become characters in medieval times, and learn to work together to creatively problem-solve, enhance understanding of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) concepts, and build towers, boats, drawbridges, catapults and more.
  • Chefs of Tomorrow: for grades 4-6 at $35 per camper, per session
    Campers can choose one, two, three, or all four sessions: June 20, Breakfast; June 27, Lunch; July 25, Dinner; and August 1, Dessert.
    9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Fridays, all located in the Culinary Lab in the Student Center
    Campers will learn the basics to cook safely with a different theme every meeting. Samples will be taken home at the end of each session.
  • Comic Book Art
    For grades 1-3 at $60 per camper
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, June 16-19 or 1 – 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, July 21-24 in the Vocational Building, Room 118
    For grades 4-8 at $60 per camper
    1 – 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 16-19 or 9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, July 21-24 in the Vocational Building, Room 118
    Campers will learn about comic book illustration by developing cartooning skills. By the end of the camp, attendees will have designed their own comic book.
  • Creative Writing
    For grades 4-6 at $60 per camper
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, July 28-31 in the Science Building, Room 106
    For grades 7-12 at $60 per camper
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, June 23-26 in the Science Building, Room 106
    Campers will study the basics of good writing from a published author through exercises and projects to help develop individual creativity. The camp will focus on prose (both fiction and nonfiction), but will also touch on poetry.
  • Dream World: for grades 1-4 at $130 per camper
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, June 23-26 in Applied Science Center, Room 103
    Using BanBao Brick kits, campers will learn the fundamentals of architecture and design for both commercial buildings and houses. They will take home three complete projects of more than 1000 pieces to continue designing at home. BanBao kits are compatible with Lego and Mega Bloks.
  • Farmland Fun: for grades 1-4 at $130 per camper
    1 – 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 23-26 in Applied Science Center, Room 103
    Campers will learn about new and old farm machines and technologies by discussing construction, buildings, storage, tools, and animals. They will use BanBao Brick kits and will take home three projects of more than 900 pieces to continue designing at home. BanBao kits are compatible with Lego and Mega Bloks.
  • Garbage Pail Science: for grades 1-6 at $60 per camper
    1 – 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 16-19 or July 28-31 at the Historic Schoolhouse on the Ina campus
    Campers will do hands-on science experiments.
  • Gardening Safari: for grades 4-7 at $60 per camper
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, July 28-31 in Applied Science Center, Room 103
    Campers will work at the RLC Greenhouse and Community Garden, learning how to plant seeds, about foliage and plant leafs, and how to use cuttings from plants. At the end of the camp, attendees will take home fresh produce. Campers are encouraged to dress for the weather as it will be outside, with closed-toed shoes, insect repellant, and sunscreen.
  • Martial Arts: for grades 1-8 at $60 per camper
    1 – 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 23-26 or July 28-31 in the Sports Center
    Campers will discover martial arts training and improve their health and coordination by practicing basic calisthenics and stretches, and learning fundamental blocks such as punches and kicks. Campers are asked to wear loose-fitting clothing and tennis shoes.
  • Me & My Buddy Cake Creations: for Pre-K and Kindergarten at $15 per camper
    9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 25 in the Learning Resource Center, Children’s Library
    Parents or caregivers and campers will create cupcakes with a summer theme using icing and candies. Aprons and large t-shirts are encouraged.
  • Pullback Car Frenzy
    For grades 1-3 at $130 per camper
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, June 16-19 in Applied Science Center, Room 101
    For grades 4-8 at $130 per camper
    1 – 4 p.m., Monday-Thursday, June 16-19 in Applied Science Center, Room 101
    Campers will build cars and participate in experiments to demonstrate science and engineering concepts designed to stimulate problem-solving and creativity with BanBao building blocks. They will take home ten projects. BanBao kits are compatible with Lego and Mega Bloks.
  • Sign Language
    For grades 1-3 at $60 per camper
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, July 28-31 in the Applied Science Center, Room 101
    For grades 4-8 at $60 per camper
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, July 21-24 in the Applied Science Center, Room 101
    Campers will learn the basics of sign language such as the alphabet, colors, numbers, words and phrases.
  • Starts and Turns Swim Camp: for grades 1-8 at $30 per camper
    1 – 4 p.m., Monday-Tuesday, June 23-24 or July 21-22 in the Aquatics Center
    Campers will work on competitive swimming starts and turns to get an edge over other swimmers. They will also practice strokes. The camp is designed for those with swim experience.
  • Survivor Camp: for grades 4-8 at $60 per camper
    9 a.m. – noon, Monday-Thursday, June 23-26 at the Historic Schoolhouse on Ina campus
    Campers will participate in the RLC version of “Survivor,” learning basic survival skills. They should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Insect repellant and sunscreen is encouraged as the camp will be outdoors, rain or shine.

Payments may be made by check, money order, credit or debit cards, or cash, and must be received at the time of registration. Parents and guardians are responsible for all transportation arrangements to and from camp.
